The Step One Challenge, Cleveland County's only county-wide walking contest, began in April 2006 as a part of the Cleveland County Health Department's Fit Together grant initiative.  Entering its 10th year the Step One Challenge has attracted over 10,000 walkers on 2100 teams.  In 2012 The Step One Challenge got a makeover, adding the Step One 5K and Fun Run to its list of activities.  Entering its 4th year, the Step One 5K has averaged 100+ runners and brought awareness to physical health in Cleveland County.

History of the Step One Challenge

The Step One Challenge is a 6 week walking challenge for the citizens of Cleveland County, North Carolina.  For 2016 the contest will run from Saturday, August 27th - Friday, October 8th.  Participants will form teams of 3-6 people and each person will receive a FREE walking log and pedometer and will track their steps over the 6 weeks, striving for 10,000 steps per day!  Prizes will be given to the top individual steppers and teams.

The Step One 5K will be held on Saturday, August 27th at 9:00 a.m. at Aldersgate UMC in Shelby.  The 5K is independent of the challenge and is open to anyone.  The cost is $15 and online is up and going.  Please see The Step One 5K for a link to registration.
